  Cardoso Flea Circus [Perspectives 124]

Maria Fernanda Cardoso has harnessed the flea’s innate capacities of strength and stamina to create a miniature spectacle, the Cardoso Flea Circus. It contains constructions by the artist that house trapeze artists, tightrope walkers, and cannon ball daredevils and is accompanied by a projected video of previous performances of the circus’ star fleas. Referencing both her Colombian heritage and references from art history, such as Alexander Calder’s Circus, the exhibition also included a number of drawings documenting the performances. Changing Perspectives [Perspectives 92]

This exhibition examines the curatorial process and how individual aesthetic decisions determine the content and installation of an exhibition.   Double Consciousness: Black Conceptual Art since 1970
Double Consciousness: Black Conceptual Art since 1970 examines the influence of a number of the critical art movements of the late 1960s on African-American art of the last half of the 20th century. By adopting and retooling the ordinary materials, tools, texts, and performances commonly identified with Conceptual art, African-American Conceptual artists created a new language that legitimized their invisible place in contemporary art history and examined the complex social and racial realities of everyday life. The catalogue focuses on the 31 artists included in the exhibition and illustrates how their work exemplifies a sensibility that has left an indelible mark on art in America—an impact that remains largely unacknowledged by the art world.   2 DVD Installations: Eija-Liisa Ahtila and Ann-Sofi Sidén [Perspectives 122]

The catalogue focuses on two short films shown as DVD projections that present new views of the human drama. Consolation Service (1999) by Finnish artist Eija-Liisa Ahtila is a split-screen human drama revolving around relationships, personal identity and transformation of the self. QM, I think I call her QM (1997) by Ann-Sofi Sidén follows an under-the-covers mud creature and the paranoid psychiatrist who discovers her. Both touch on diverse themes ranging from mother/daughter relationships to insanity and alienation. Includes essays by Lynn M. Herbert and Paola Morsiani; documentation on the artists’ careers.
