The Teen Council

The Contemporary Arts Museum Houston’s Teen Council is an ongoing program that serves as a dialogue between the Museum and the young museum-going public. The Teen Council (TC) is working to further stimulate that bond by creating programming that will introduce younger generations to the Museum.

What is the Teen Council?
The TC is a diverse group of Houston teens whose purpose is to provide young people with access to contemporary art and artists. The TC’s function is to create, organize and design teen-specific events and programs with Museum staff; to aid in marketing existing programs to teens; and to create for young people a sense of ownership at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston.
The TC consists of 15-20 highly motivated high school age students who organize, publicize, plan and coordinate events that introduce the Museum to a new audience.

What has the TC done?
• Participated in the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ Team) by giving tours of the TC organized exhibitions

• Hosted an annual Art All Night lock in at the Museum

• Met with internationally known artists, among them Nic Nicosia, Tony Oursler, Trenton Doyle Hancock, and hosted mini-residencies with several Houston area artists

• Curated and showcased a Houston area Teen Film Festival

• Organized and hosted an annual Teen Day at the Museum

• Hosted a fashion show, featuring works by local designers of all ages

• Brought a printmaking workshop to patients of the Texas Children’s Hospital Cancer Center

• The TC has big plans for the future, including curating a Houston area High School exhibition in the spring of 2007.

What do the members get out of it?
Members of the Teen Council, due to their motivation and youthful point of view bring a unique perspective to the Museum. In joining the TC members are given many opportunities, such as:

• a chance to help the Museum grow into something that the TC can share in
• planning and organizing an exhibition
• to learn from working with established artists
• a sense of ownership in the Museum and the community
• a voice in the Museum’s decisions
• organizational experience
• a stipend
• working with a group of peers interested in the art of today

How do I join?
Applications are taken in spring for the following school year, and are available online at the Museums website, www.camh.org. You can email the TC at tc@camh.org
